Toby Park

Toby Park is one of the more elusive parks in Northeastern Pennsylvania's history. There exist only a few sources. Even the most comprehensive source for amusement parks from the past, the short lived Northeastern Pennsylvania from 1982 only has this short mention: "Some people believe that there was an amusement park at Tobyhanna" - B. Derek Shaw.

Toby Park's opening date is unknown, but it was reported to have closed sometime in the 1950's after being destroyed by a hurricane and/or it's flood waters. If this information is accurate, it was most likely Hurricane Hazel in 1954, or the following year's harsh winter and subsequent snow melt.

In the late 1940's, the park purchased the carousel that had operated at Knoebel's since 1926. It was destroyed by the same event that closed the park, except one horse that was recovered and restored. The horse is now on display in Knoebel's Carousel Museum.

It is also interesting to note that this park shares much the same story as Harrison Park (also known as Tobey's) that may have operated a few miles away at Blakeslee Corners.

Information obtained from Times Leader, May 3 1992, Northeastern Pennsylvania, Feb. 17 1982, and weather.com.
